Information security is the foundation of this 24/7 financial services provider’s business and the importance of the continued education of its current managers and employees is paramount. As part one of the training initiative (the second focuses on new employees) the challenge of this course is to closely relate to the employee who is already firmly rooted in the company’s culture. The client wanted an experience that oozes the company’s brand and allows the user to feel emboldened by their part in the community.
KMI’s solution was to create a relatable experience for the existing employee who is already keenly familiar with the company culture. We chose to invoke financial imagery that can be seen in the offices such as scrolling text and soft colorful transitions. In order to create personal connections we feature stories and testimonials of accomplished employees company-wide in woven video montages. These familiar faces are intended to unite the global offices under common goals. Another theme we incorporated is a flowing timeline approach which suggests processes that span the calendar year and express the importance of continued vigilance.
Behind the Design: Kinetic Background Animation
Our soft floating background was the primary design component of the course. Depth, identity and forward thinking is created by layers of scrolling company logos. Gradually changing colors completes the brand and allows us to subtly change the course’s appearance every few seconds. The result is a gentle yet bold and kinetic display of corporate branding.
The client has experienced a significant and quantifiable improvement to overall corporate information security and a decrease in information security related incidents. By all measurable accounts, formal and informal, the down-to-earth approach has created increased completion rates and a rise in corporate morale and dedication to better security.
Behind the Design: Talking UX
The user experience is something we at KMI take very seriously. Every project has its unique requirements and we love the challenge developing creative solutions for producing the simplest and most intuitive experience. Below are two solutions we proposed. They incorporate a seamless “timeline” navigation complete with scrubbing features and standard play and closed caption controls. While the timeline is not literal based on course content its intent is conceptual and merely suggest the passage of time and due vigilance.
Behind the Design: Video Montage
In a few different video montages we asked employees from the different global offices to share their experiences on different topics such as various kinds of security risks. Rather than developing a simple single-cut video we created a multi-window approach which better complimented our course design. Local in-house video crews filmed the unscripted employees on location. This allowed us to give a clear sense of location while keeping production costs extremely low. The employees were asked to tell their stories with the only instruction being to turn and present the same question off camera. This “tossing the question” from person to person in a rolling manner creates a very original and effective alternative to standard, high-value video production.
